On Monday afternoon, Penn State football landed a highly-touted out of state prospect: Joseph Mupoyi. Mupoyi is a three-star recruit from Connecticut and is ranked No. 45 among edge rushers in his class.

Mupoyi is not ranked very high nationally, ranking No. 520 overall, No. 45 as an edge rusher, and No. 4 in Connecticut (247Sports). At the same time, Mupoyi has a ton of upside and potential that James Franklin wants in State College.

Mupoyi stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs in at 230 pounds. He is coming to Penn State football from St. Thomas More High School in Connecticut.

What does Mupoyi add to Penn State’s 2023 class?

Penn State football now has the 13th-ranked recruiting class in the nation (247) and the 2nd-ranked class in the Big Ten. Mupoyi is the fifth three-star to commit to Franklin and his 2023 Nittany Lions, and is Penn State’s third edge rusher in the class.

Mupoyi is the first player from Connecticut to join the 2023 recruiting class, and one of 15 players from the east coast. Of Penn State’s 20 commits for 2023, one is a five-star, 14 are four-stars, and five are three-stars. The class has accumulated 263.45 points and is currently a good bit ahead of Michigan, who has the third-ranked class in the conference.

Mupoyi’s other offers

Mupoyi brings a lot of talent, a huge frame, and loads of potential to the table. Today’s commitment is huge for Penn State for many reasons, namely because the Nittany Lions beat out numerous other huge programs for his commitment.

Here are the programs that Penn State football beat for Mupoyi’s commitment:

  1. Auburn Tigers (SEC)
  2. Maryland Terrapins (Big Ten)
  3. Miami (FL) Hurricanes (ACC)
  4. Michigan Wolverines (Big Ten)
  5. Ole Miss Rebels (SEC)
  6. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (Big Ten)
  7. Utah Utes (PAC-12)

Mupoyi had been offered by at least one school in four of the five P5 conferences. Penn State landing him over teams like Ole Miss and Auburn in the SEC is impressive, though beating the current Big Ten Champions (Michigan) is by far the most impressive.

I do not think Mupoyi will come in and make an immediate impact, but in a few years time, I could see him playing a large role at Penn State, perhaps even earning a starting role.

Next. Michigan has best path through College Football Playoff. dark
