Sam Hartman is officially in the transfer portal. Here’s why he makes sense for Notre Dame Football.

Per a report from ESPN College Football writer Pete Thamel, Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman is expected to enter the transfer portal, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are expected to sign him:

Hartman led the Demon Deacons to a victory over the Missouri Tigers in the Gasparilla Bowl, throwing three touchdowns. The graduate transfer leaves Winston-Salem as the most prolific passer in school history. Hartman owns the record for career passing yards (12,967) and touchdowns (110). He leaves the ACC second all-time in passing yards, and fourth in touchdown passes.

Hartman led the Demon Deacons to its second ACC Championship game in 2021, throwing for over 4,000 yards. He followed that season by throwing for 3,701 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Notre Dame finished 8-4 and had an unexpectedly excellent performance from the backup quarterback Drew Pyne who threw for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns. Pete Sampson of the Athletic reported that the team told Pyne of their intentions to find another quarterback in the transfer portal. One of their targets, Texas transfer Hudson Card, signed with Purdue.

That opens the door for Hartman, an upgrade over Pyne and the rest of the quarterbacks on their roster. Here is a closer look at what could fit South Bend.
