Notre Dame football could not go into 2023 without a quarterback.

Everyone in South Bend feels that 2023 is the year the Irish could make a run at the College Football Playoff. Though Notre Dame will lose a ton on defense, they’ve done a great job addressing the defensive line and secondary in recruiting and could still do work in the portal. The offense has great young pieces like Lorenzo Styles and Deion Colzie.

Notre Dame has proven they can be a championship-level team. They’ve made two appearances in the College Football Playoff, losing to the eventual National Champion both times. One of the knocks in both situations was the quarterback. Ian Book is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Notre Dame history, but there’s a difference between Book and Trevor Lawrence.

This season was a step-back year for the Irish. The Tyler Buchner injury was a blessing in disguise. When he went down, Pyne stepped in and played admirably. The Irish found an identity but were limited in the passing game.

As good as Pyne was, Hartman is an upgrade. Bringing in Hartman allows Buchner to get some seasoning. He has tools but has not played a lot of football. Hartman is a proven commodity who’s played and won at a high level.
