3 takeaways from Cheez-it Bowl win for Florida State football
Florida State football notched a huge win over Oklahoma and clinched the Seminoles’ first 10-win season since 2016. Here are three takeaways.
There were Cheez-its everywhere before, during, and after the 2022 Cheez-it Bowl but so far, it has been one of the best games of the bowl season.
Florida State football and Oklahoma battled but Jordan Travis made a few more plays than Dillon Gabriel and got the Seminoles into range for a game-winning field goal and a 35-32 win in the 2022 Cheez-it Bowl.
Here are three takeaways.
Start the Heisman campaign for Jordan Travis
There’s a reason that people are already talking about Florida State football quarterback Jordan Travis as a 2023 Heisman Trophy candidate.
His numbers were as good as previous Florida State football Heisman Trophy winners this past season and he was dynamic against Oklahoma with 418 passing yards and 50 yards on the ground too.
Travis did have an interception but his development has been critical for this Florida State football program and with him coming back for the 2023 season, the Seminoles have a shot to contend for the ACC title next season.
At the very least.
Mike Norvell is off the hot set
It’s been apparent all season but remember when people were talking about Norvell being on the hot seat? The first two seasons were a struggle as Florida State went 8-13 and had some really difficult losses.
But in 2022, Florida State football beat Miami, beat Florida, and won a bowl game. Thanks to the 35-32 win over Oklahoma, which was in dramatic fashion, the Seminoles have a great chance of ending up in the top 10 of the final AP poll, which also hasn’t happened since 2016 — the last time they won 10 games.
The Norvell hire didn’t look great but is a great example of why patience is needed because now, the Seminoles are definitely trending up in a big way.
A rough year continues for Brent Venables
The Cheez-it Bowl was a great opportunity for the Oklahoma Sooners because it would allow them to finish with a winning record and knock off the No. 13 team in the country.
When Oklahoma took the lead into the half and led in the fourth quarter, it looked like that outcome was very possible. Instead, it was like most of the 2022 season — a good start and a disappointing finish.
Oklahoma was fortunate to make a bowl game and did well to rally for that at least, but back-to-back losses and a losing season won’t make Sooner fans happy, nor should it.
Although getting Dillon Gabriel back for next season should make OU fans feel a little better.
