College football: Ranking all head coaches in 2022 New Year’s Six bowls
Willie Fritz was the easiest pick for No. 12 on this list not because he’s a bad coach (he’s not) but rather because he’s coming off his first season of more than seven wins at Tulane. Winning at Tulane isn’t easy and Fritz deserves a ton of credit, but he’s just 42-45 there and the rest of the coaches on this list have proven much more.
Tulane will have a chance to really silence the doubters and Fritz could garner some Power Five interest if his team is able to take down USC in the Cotton Bowl.
This almost feels like a disrespectful ranking for Sonny Dykes because he’s a proven veteran, but he just isn’t at the level of 10 coaches ahead of him. He’s had his best season as a college football coach, leading TCU to a 12-1 record and a playoff berth in his first season. No one expected TCU to break out like this in Dykes’ first year, but here we are.
Dykes is a program builder but no one expected him to have this much success early on at TCU. We’ll see if Max Duggan can make him look like a genius and lead the Horned Frogs to the national title game with a win over Michigan.
