I may get a little bit of hate for this one, but I would like to see more from James Franklin before I can move him up this list. He’s been truly inconsistent throughout his Penn State career and he’s had plenty of coaching mishaps that led to losses. But yet Penn State is back in the New Year’s Six after a disappointing 2021 season.

Franklin is still a good coach, no doubt, but he has plenty to prove.

Winning the Rose Bowl would be a good start because the last time he made this bowl game, he lost to USC in a thriller. He’ll get a crack at Utah to secure his first Rose Bowl win and first bowl win since 2019.

Probably the most underrated head coach in college football, Kyle Whittingham is coaching his second straight Rose Bowl and he’ll have a real shot to finish with a better result than last year’s comeback loss to Ohio State.

Utah has won its second straight Pac-12 title and the Utes are just the epitome of a good football program. You can’t say a bad thing about Utah or Whittingham because both do things the right way.

Whittingham seems to only be getting better with age as he’s won 10-plus games in three of the past four seasons.
