3 reasons TCU football will upset Georgia in national title game
The takeaways
The TCU football defense gave up more than 500 yards against Michigan and allowed 45 points, which doesn’t bode all that well for the national title game.
However, there is one reason that TCU is playing on Monday night and Michigan isn’t and it was the ability to take the football away in key moments.
TCU ranked outside the top 50 in scoring defense during the regular season and allowed over 25 points per game even before the Fiesta Bowl.
Yet, one area where they have been consistently good is taking the football away which has allowed the Horned Frogs to win the turnover battle frequently this season.
TCU turned it over twice in the Fiesta Bowl, but forced three turnovers — two of them were returned for touchdowns. They also had a key fourth-down stop at the two-yard line.
As we saw during the College Football Playoff semifinals, we aren’t going to see an old-school 21-14 game — it’s going to be a high-scoring affair. And it’s going to come down to who can make big plays on both sides of the ball and TCU has shown a knack for it all year.
Georgia is also turning the ball over 1.3 times per game, which is about twice as much as Michigan coming into the playoff.
Georgia will have to get used to the 3-3-5 defense which confused Michigan’s offense and neutralized the Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line. If the Horned Frogs can confuse the Bulldogs in the run game a little and find a way to turn over Stetson Bennett, they can win.
Winning the turnover battle is a requirement and TCU football is more than capable of making it happen, which is another reason I can see them pulling a massive upset Monday night.
