1. Alabama

Some college football fans might not agree with having Alabama as the top contender to Georgia, but I honestly believe Alabama might have had the second-best team in the country this season.

The Crimson Tide didn’t prove it on the field. But after watching the Sugar Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and the Peach Bowl, I have no doubt Alabama could have beaten any of the other College Football Playoff participants (not Georgia) and likely would have been favored against them.

Bryce Young won’t be back and Will Anderson is just as big of a loss. Yet, Alabama is still Alabama. It had the No. 1 recruiting class in 2023 and it’s still loaded for bear.

Jahmyr Gibbs and Henry To’oTo’o are other key losses. Jalen Milroe had some ups and downs at quarterback but Ty Simpson was a five-star QB in 2022 and rated as the No. 2 dual-threat.

And unless people forgot, Georgia will have a brand new starting quarterback too. In fact, only one of the top four teams in the SEC — LSU — returns their starting QB as Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama will all have new signal-callers.

If Stroud does leave for the draft, you can add Ohio State to that mix in terms of top-10 teams with new starters. Michigan, Florida State, and LSU each bring theirs back, as do Oregon and also Washington.

Those teams were right below my top five because I don’t see a Pac-12 team knocking off the Bulldogs, outside of maybe Oregon. However, I don’t trust Bo Nix in a big game and he reminded us why in 2022.

Georgia is still the favorite in my book until someone proves they can be beaten. But of all the college football teams, these are the five with the best chance to prevent a 3-peat.
