Head coach Deion Sanders continues to be aggressive in the transfer portal for Colorado football, while the Buffs are also trending for a 5-star in 2023.

It was another exciting weekend for Colorado football on the recruiting trail. The Buffaloes landed a couple of edge rushers in the transfer portal and got closer to finally flipping five-star 2023 cornerback Cormani McClain.

Although some of the posts have since been deleted, it sure looked like McClain was on campus visiting Colorado football and head coach Deion Sanders over the weekend.

McClain, the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2023 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings, and the No. 1 ranked cornerback has been committed to Miami but didn’t sign in the early period.

Florida and Alabama have also been in the mix for McClain, a 6-foot-2, 165-pounder out of Lakeland, Florida. Mario Cristobal and Miami seemed to have him locked up after a verbal pledge back in October.

However, the Hurricanes really struggled on the field and Coach Prime has been making a push since he was hired at Colorado football and the idea of McClain and Travis Hunter in the same secondary is incredible.

That would be the No. 1 cornerback in the 2022 recruiting class and the No. 1 cornerback in the 2023 recruiting class. If you count Fisher, McClain would also be the third commitment of a five-star prospect in the month or so since Sanders was hired.

It’s been impressive and the Buffs certainly don’t look like a team that’s going to be fighting to win one or two games in 2023.

CU has four crystal ball projections to land McClain right now but two that are absent are Andrew Ivins and Steve Wiltfong. They don’t have predictions in for any team right now and those crystal balls are ones to keep an eye on as the late-signing period approaches.

Key edge rusher additions for Colorado football

McClain would be part of the 2023 Colorado football team (if the Buffs get his commitment) and that’s a good thing because the talent really needs an upgrade. Sanders has been working on that and added two productive pass rushers over the weekend via the portal.

Taylor Upshaw of Michigan was one. Upshaw has one season left but had 5.5 sacks for Michigan. as well as 10 tackles for loss in his career. Sanders and Colorado also picked up Jordan Domineck, an EDGE from Arkansas that had 7.5 sacks last season, as well as 9.5 tackles for loss.

Putting pressure on the opposing quarterback is vital. Even if you have a set of elite cornerbacks as Colorado might well have in 2023, you need that pass rush to get home, and the Buffaloes added 10 sacks over the weekend, which certainly can’t hurt.
