Analyzing transfer of Mike Wright to Mississippi State football
Mississippi State football added a former starting SEC quarterback via the transfer portal on Sunday in Mike Wright who is coming from Vanderbilt.
Mike Wright was a team captain for Vanderbilt last season and helped lead the Commodores to wins over Kentucky and Florida this past season.
Yet, Wright entered the transfer portal after the season, and on Sunday, we found out where he’s going to play and it will be for the Mississippi State football program.
It’s an interesting decision because the Bulldogs are returning their starter from last season in Will Rogers who has thrown 71 touchdown passes over the past two seasons.
Mississippi State football will have a new head coach as Zach Arnett has taken over the late Mike Leach. So the offense could be a little different, however, you’d think the Bulldogs would stick with what has worked and the program has won lots of games in recent years.
Wright is going to join the quarterback room and it creates one of the more interesting quarterback competitions in the SEC. Ole Miss is going to have an interesting QB battle with Jaxson Dart, Walker Howard, and Spencer Sanders duking it out for the starting job and now, in-state rival Mississippi State football will be doing the same.
Looking ahead to the Mississippi State football QB competition
Rogers will come back and you’d think he would have the leg up on the starting job. If not, maybe he would transfer after the spring because many teams would love to add a quarterback as productive as Rogers.
Still, Rogers will now be competing with Wright who threw 12 touchdown passes last season but also had under 1,000 yards passing. Wright is a career 55 percent passer and has 21 touchdown passes compared to 12 interceptions.
At the same time, he’s got over 500 yards rushing in each of the past two seasons and maybe the Bulldogs are looking to bring a dual-threat element to their offense.
Chris Parson a four-star quarterback from the 2023 class is also expected to be in the mix and while you wouldn’t think he would win the job, he’s talented and the prized recruit in the Bulldogs’ 2023 recruiting class.
It will be interesting to follow how things play out for Mississippi State and we now have another SEC quarterback battle to follow this spring and into the fall.
