For the first time in recent memory, the Big Ten isn’t returning a clear frontrunner for the best quarterback in the conference. That means Penn State football’s Drew Allar could take that crown by the end of the 2023 season.

Returning for the 2023 season are guys like JJ McCarthy, Taulia Tagovailoa, Payton Thorne, and even Cade McNamara made the move from Michigan to Iowa to be the Hawkeyes’ QB1.

There is no clear QB1 for the conference although McCarthy looks like the leader in that category followed by Tagovailoa. There are even some newcomers like Luke Altmyer, Jeff Sims, and Hudson Card, or a first-year starter like Kyle McCord who is replacing CJ Stroud.

Allar might be the most talented of all the quarterbacks named outside of McCarthy. The two feel like they’re on the same level with unlimited ceilings.

But could Allar become the Big Ten’s top quarterback after taking over for Sean Clifford? I say yes.

Allar has the potential to lead Penn State football to greatness

While Clifford looked much improved this past season, there’s no doubt that Allar had the higher ceiling and probably would have elevated the Penn State offense.

Allar is just a different breed of quarterback.

With the Big Ten being rather wide open this season since CJ Stroud is gone and JJ McCarthy and Michigan are the favorites but could be challenged by a young, talented team like Penn State (especially getting the Wolverines at home), Allar could lead this team to a division title.

Although he didn’t play a ton as a true freshman, there were flashes shown. He has elite potential and even Gabe Brooks of 247Sports stated that he has future first-round draft pick potential and compared him to Josh Allen.

That’s some high praise.

Allar is going to be really good this season and Penn State’s offense should be one of the scariest in the Big Ten. If he throws for around 3,000 yards and 20-plus touchdowns, there will be talk about him being the league’s top quarterback.

I think he does just that.
