Tommy Rees has moved on. The Notre Dame football offensive coordinator decided to join Nick Saban at Alabama, leaving his alma mater for a perennial powerhouse.

The Irish will now be forced to find a new offensive coordinator and Marcus Freeman’s hiring chops will be tested yet again. This will be a big hire for the second-year head coach as this could either make or break his program for years to come.

Here are a few potential candidates that I think could replace Rees as Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator in 2023.

3. Clint Trickett, Marshall offensive coordinator

Quite possibly one of the fastest-rising offensive minds in college football, Clint Trickett has gone from West Virginia quarterback in 2014 to East Mississippi C.C. offensive coordinator and ‘Last Chance U’ star on Netflix to Florida Atlantic offensive coordinator to Marshall receivers coach and then he was promoted to offensive coordinator with the Thundering Herd after one season.

And Notre Dame fans are extra familiar with Trickett as his Thundering Herd pulled off the upset in South Bend this past season.

Marshall’s offense improve a healthy amount in 2022 after a somewhat quiet 2021 season and he’s proving that he deserves a look as a major program offensive coordinator.

Could Marcus Freeman opt to keep the staff young and hire the 31-year-old Trickett? It wouldn’t be a terrible option.
