Texas A&M Football: 3 Burning Questions this offseason
A disappointing 2022 season left plenty of questions for Texas A&M football this offseason, primarily on the offensive side of the ball.
Cratering to 5-7 was never supposed to be in the cards for Texas A&M Football, not after the Aggies had emptied the bank to hire a national championship-winning head coach and invested even more in the college football facilities arms race. 2022 might not have had to have been “the year” but it needed to be more than what it was.
After so many happy offseasons in College Station, the vibe entering this one is decidedly more tense. There’s a lot on the line for stakeholders both inside and outside of the Texas A&M locker room.
Now, questions remain, and deservedly so. As the Aggies enter the offseason, here are three big-ticket items that will go a long way toward determining whether or not last season was a blip on the radar or a harbinger of bad things to come. First, the new face in town.
1. Can Bobby Petrino fix the offense?
Head coach Jimbo Fisher has allegedly pledged to surrender offensive control to new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who the Aggies hired away from UNLV this winter after a head coaching stint at Missouri State.
Petrino doesn’t have the shiny new young coordinator vibe, but he does have experience leading explosive offenses and frankly, many around Texas A&M would settle for good, not require great, in Year 1. The terrifying reality, though, is this. If the offense doesn’t get better… what happens next?
Whether it’s Petrino’s influence, Fisher’s ability to let go, some other factor, or a combination of things, the offense has to get better and it will understandably be the focal point of the coverage of this team until it does.
