A number of well-known college football quarterbacks were drafted in the 2023 USFL draft on Tuesday and here is where each college QB landed.

The USFL is getting set for its second season of football and the league held its second annual selection meeting on Tuesday with the 2023 USFL draft.

It was a much different affair than a year ago as the focus was college football players instead of veterans. Now that the league has been around for a year, college talent was the focus of Tuesday’s 2023 USFL draft as there were 80 college football players drafted and some interesting picks along the way.

The USFL is trying to focus on players that would be day three picks or go undrafted. The USFL can then provide these players with a chance to showcase their abilities this spring, with the hope of possibly moving up to the NFL in the fall.

It’s an interesting strategy and one that could help the league take hold. A number of well-known college football quarterbacks were selected into the league on Tuesday and it leaves those guys with interesting decisions.

One player that was drafted was Minnesota football player Tanner Morgan. He was a four-year starter for the Golden Gophers and definitely has NFL potential. Morgan was taken in the second round by the Michigan Panthers and one reason for that is he could be looking to pursue an NFL career first.

Players selected in the 2023 UFSL draft have the ability to play in the NFL, but if they are cut or don’t get drafted, the USFL team retains their rights if they choose to play in the league.

So Morgan is a guy that could join the Panthers or try to take a shot at the NFL first. Another QB in that boat is former Nebraska/Kansas State standout Adrian Martinez, who was selected by former Nebraska football head coach Mike Riley of the New Jersey Generals.

For Martinez, this is a great opportunity. It seems unlikely that he would be drafted in the NFL and his best bet might be making some noise in the USFL. It’s that or potentially trying to make it somewhere as a practice squad guy.

Maybe the most intriguing selection in the 2023 USFL draft in terms of college football quarterbacks is Malik Cunningham. The Louisville standout was selected in the third round by the Birmingham Stallions and he’s another guy that could have NFL interest.

Cunningham isn’t expected to be an early pick though and like Martinez and Morgan, the chance to play right away in a professional league could be intriguing.

College football quarterbacks go in the first round of 2023 USFL draft

Two other college football quarterbacks that could be joining the league right away are Incarnate Word’s Lindsey Scott Jr. who was selected in the first round by the Pittsburgh Maulers. My guess is that is because Pittsburgh sees Scott Jr. as playing in the league sooner than later.

The Houston Gamblers took Chase Brice of App State also in the first round, making five college football quarterbacks total selected in the 2023 USFL draft.

I’m all for some spring football and the USFL is giving a chance for college football fans to continue to follow some of their favorite players, even if they need some work to get to the NFL.

With Malik Cunningham,  Adrian Martinez, and Tanner Morgan especially, I’ll be interested to see if those guys continue to push for the NFL draft or take their opportunity in the USFL.
