Purdue football is starting fresh in the 2023 season with a new head coach and a new starting quarterback.

There is always a transition in college football from one season to the next. Players leave for the NFL, transfer, or graduate.

But this offseason is one defined by change for the Purdue football program which lost head coach Jeff Brohm to Louisville along with quarterback Aidan O’Connell to graduation.

The Boilermakers were able to hire one of the bright young minds in college football, on the defensive side of the ball in Ryan Walters away from Illinois.

Walters was a candidate for the Colorado job and it was only a matter of time before he was taken away after being a huge part of the turnaround at Illinois under Bret Bielema.

Purdue football is going to look different in the coming years. Brohm was one of the best offensive minds in college football and had one of the best quarterbacks.

That’s why the Boilermakers were able to reach the Big Ten championship game last season. However, Walters has done a good job of recruiting some talented players to join the Purdue football program and chief among them is former Texas quarterback Hudson Card.

Hudson Card is one of the transfer portal’s most underrated additions

Card is ranked as the No. 3 quarterback in the 2023 college football transfer portal according to 247 sports. The great thing is that Card is that he’s experienced, he’s talented, as a former four-star recruit, and he’s got multiple years of eligibility.

Card has just 11 career touchdown passes — throwing them over the past two seasons in relief of Quinn Ewers. He also has just two interceptions in that time and when he’s gotten on the field, he looks more than capable of being a quality starting quarterback.

The former Texas signal-caller has just 198 pass attempts but is a career 65 percent passer and should do a solid job of filling the shoes left by O’Connell.

It’s not often that Purdue football is going to be in a position to land the No. 59 overall prospect in a recruiting class but that’s where Card ranked in 2020. He was also ranked as the second-best dual threat.
