UAB football has garnered plenty of attention with their Head Coach hire of Trent Dilfer. Here are four players key to their success in 2023.

It is a period of transition for the UAB football program. They move from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference in 2023 and do so under new leadership.

Trent Dilfer had been coaching high school football in Tennessee and now finds himself the face of the Blazers. With 13 years of NFL playing experience his hire has come with its fair share of media coverage. Dilfer and his inexperienced coaching staff will be under the microscope from the get-go this year.

The hope will be that UAB football can continue its recent success and be bowl eligible come the end of the season. In this article, we’ll take a look at the players that will be key to making that happen.

4. Mac McWilliams, Cornerback

Mac McWilliams enters his redshirt junior season having manned one of the outside corner spots for the last two years. Pairing with Starling Thomas V last year he logged 10 pass breakups and one interception. That was only over 8 games, the rest of the year was lost to injury.

Despite only being 5’10, McWilliams is physical and willing to put his body on the line. He thrives when given the opportunity to line up in press-man coverage. Ultimately his frame may dictate a move to the inside should he ascend to the NFL but in college, he has the speed and ball skills to be adept in one-on-one coverage.
