Florida Football

After watching the Florida football spring game, it was clear that the Gators needed to upgrade at the quarterback position via the transfer portal and Thompson gives them a great chance to do so.

Graham Mertz is fine, but he couldn’t really hack it at Wisconsin and I don’t think trotting him out as the starter is going to help Florida football improve its record in 2023. In fact, if he or Jack Miller is the starter, just getting back to a bowl game feels like a mountain to climb.

Thompson could change that trajectory though. Casey Thompson isn’t perfect by any means — Jeff Sims is essentially getting the job at Nebraska over him — but part of that is scheme fit. Thompson is more of a thrower and Sims is a dual threat.

Thompson has an elite deep ball and playing in the SEC would be the perfect chance to showcase himself for the NFL, plus it would give Florida football a starter with proven productivity.

Mertz did throw 19 touchdown passes last season but has 26 career interceptions. Thompson has just 19 and is a 64 percent passer for his career. Mertz is at 59 and the Gators better hope they can get Thompson on campus for a visit because they need a QB like him badly.
