It could be a big week for Dan Lanning and Oregon football as four-star defensive lineman Xadavien Sims is announcing his commitment on Saturday, May 20.

The four-star lineman announced last week that he had a top five of Michigan State, Vanderbilt, TCU, Oklahoma, and Oregon and it kind of surprised some people. Michigan State had been the favorite for a while and Oklahoma was the in-state school for Sims, but Vanderbilt, TCU, and Oregon seemed to be surprising additions.

Well, it seems like Oregon may actually be one of the presumed leaders to land the four-star from Durant, Okla., as he’s getting set to commit.

According to the On3 prediction machine, the Ducks are gaining ground and picked up a few predictions to land Sims just last week after he named his top five. That’s big since the previous favorite (Michigan State) didn’t have a prediction for months.

For the record, Oklahoma, too, seems to be picking up steam.

This could be a three-team race to land Sims, but Oregon has to like its chances.

Oregon football could close late once again

Under Lanning and even in the Mario Cristobal era, Oregon had been known for closing late on top recruits and Sims could just be the latest to follow that trend.

Back in November, it felt like Michigan State was a lock, but the longer the recruiting process drew out, the better chances other programs felt they had. And Oregon offered back in January and is already looking like one of the top 2-3 schools to land his commitment.

Lanning knows defense and Oregon has a lot to offer so it wouldn’t be the biggest shock to see him pick the Ducks over the Spartans and Sooners who both had disappointing 2022 seasons.

Sims is ranked the No. 194 overall recruit in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite.
