Michigan Football continues to build insane momentum in 2024
Michigan football has been rolling on the recruiting trail and even though the Wolverines aren’t No. 1 anymore, they still have tons of momentum.
The Michigan football team relinquished the No. 1 ranking in the 2024 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings to the Georgia Bulldogs this week and, likely, UGA isn’t going to give up that ranking anytime soon.
Georgia added three commitments this week including a top-100 tight end. The Bulldogs had a couple of setbacks including Florida State flipping Landen Thomas in April, but things are back on track, and with the No. 1 quarterback, Dylan Raiola, committing last week, the trend up should continue.
Michigan football probably won’t land enough five-star recruits to compete with Georgia for the top spot but the Wolverines still look in position for a top-five haul, which is a major improvement from where the program was a year ago, ranking 17th in 2023.
The positive momentum continued this week as Michigan football is projected to pull off a flip of former Notre Dame commitment Owen Wafle. He was committed to Notre Dame for over a year re-opening his recruitment on Wednesday and started trending to Michigan.
Beyond that, Michigan football has gotten new expert projections for four-star running back Taylor Tatum who is ranked No. 1 at the position via 247 Sports, as well as three-star running back Micah Kaapana who received a crystal ball projection to U-M.
Three-star defensive tackle Deyvid Palepale also got projected to Michigan football this week with a crystal ball and projection from EJ Holland of The Wolverine. EDGE Jacob Smith, EDGE Devon Baxter, and top-200 EDGE Darien Mayo all got expert projections too.
That doesn’t even include top-100 linebacker Aaron Chiles, four-star linebacker Jeremiah Beasley, four-star wideout I’Marion Stewart, and a bunch more that have been trending toward a commitment.
The Wolverines are also hosting five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo next month, top-40 wideout Gatlin Bair, and five-star defensive tackle Justin Scott.
Elite recruits are buying what Michigan football is selling. But the Wolverines are also doing what they have always done under Jim Harbaugh, which is evaluate and take solid football players, regardless of the recruiting ranking.
So even some of these “three-stars” won’t play like three-star recruits for Michigan football, which has been a huge key to the Wolverines’ success.
But now that Michigan has had so much success the elite players are coming too, even if the NIL isn’t necessarily what it is at other schools. It’s a great sign of sustained success and the Wolverines look to have real staying power with this kind of recruiting class.
