There’s no clarity at all about who will be the starting quarterback for the Alabama football team in 2023.

One of the strange things about the upcoming college football season is that a number of the usual national title contenders are going to have new starting quarterbacks.

Georgia, the defending national champions, will have a new starter. So will Alabama football, Ohio State, Clemson, Penn State, and more.

Alabama football might have the messiest situation of all the teams mentioned. The Tide went out and got Tyler Buchner in the transfer portal this spring and he was expected to be the backup for Notre Dame to Sam Hartman.

If you told Alabama football fans last year they would be adding Notre Dame’s castoff in the spring as its starter, I don’t see them being excited.

However, Buchner does have talent. He was a former four-star recruit who had had some great moments against South Carolina in the Gator Bowl. He also threw three interceptions and didn’t light the world on fire at Ohio State last season.

Other options for Alabama football at quarterback

Four-star Jalen Milroe started in place of Bryce Young last season. He wasn’t bad, but he certainly wasn’t dynamic and you wonder if there is a dynamic QB on this roster.

Ty Simpson has dynamic talent. All five guys do. When the 2023 signees are enrolled, there will be five guys that once ranked in the top 150 overall on the Alabama football roster at quarterback.

But who will be the starter? I have to think Buchner has a good shot. I doubt Alabama guaranteed him the job. Yet, he knows the offense and Tommy Rees knows him too.

Still, the fact that Bama was even looking for a potential starter this spring, should give fans a cause for concern. You never want one of your roster question marks to be at the quarterback position and despite a plethora of choices, a No. 1 option needs to emerge.

If not, Alabama football could be out of the Colege Football Playoff for the second year in a row.
