Nebraska football landed a big commitment when it got Daniel Kaelin recently and now, the Huskers are the favorite for the No. 1 recruit in the state.

Flipping the commitment of three-star in-state quarterback Daniel Kaelin was huge for the Nebraska football program and it might have been even more important than we realized.

Kaelin is definitely better than his three-star composite ranking suggests. Something to back that up is the fact that he was invited to the Elite 11 finals. Only 20 invitations go out to players and if Kaelin does well there, my guess is that he gets upgraded to a four-star.

At any rate, the ranking doesn’t really matter. Kaelin has become the face of Nebraska’s recruiting class and that’s a positive thing.

At the very least, it seems to be helping with some top 2024 targets including elite tight end Carter Nelson, who is ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of Nebraska in the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as ninth among tight ends. He’s ranked in the 150 overall and I wouldn’t be shocked if he cracked the top 100.

Georgia and Notre Dame are both going to get official visits. Yet, Georgia has taken two other tight ends and Nelson visited Nebraska football this weekend, along with Kaelin.

On Tuesday, a few days after the visit, Greg Smith, a recruiting analyst for Rivals, put in a Futurecast pick for Nelson to land with the Huskers. Smith is known as a Nebraska insider and has gotten more of his predictions correct, so this is a really good sign.

Nebraska football seems to be leading with Carter Nelson

It does seem like things are trending in the right direction, especially with Nelson visiting on June 23rd, the same weekend as Kaelin.

Mario Buford a four-star cornerback also got a Futurecast from Smith to Nebraska football. He’s picked up some crystal balls and On3 expert projections too.

Jacob Barney, a top-500 wide receiver from the state of Florida from the 2024 class, also received his second crystal ball projection to the Huskers, as did three-star in-state offensive lineman Caleb Pyfrom.

The biggest revelation is that the Huskers are likely the favorite for Carter Nelson. He’s elite and at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, could be a top-100 recruit. He’s basically the Malachi Coleman of this class and if Matt Rhule lands him and Kaelin, it’ll be a home run.

And while we’ve got no indication of a commitment, things are trending in the right direction.
