Notre Dame football quarterback Sam Hartman was rated as the top transfer portal addition at quarterback which bodes well for the Irish in 2023.

There are still guys entering and leaving the transfer portal (graduates can still enter) but for the most part, the biggest moves in the 2023 cycle are all said and done.

Notre Dame football didn’t make a ton of moves via the college football transfer portal, but that’s by design. The Irish have a really good football team. They didn’t need to rebuild their entire roster via the transfer portal.

But when Sam Hartman, the former Wake Forest signal-caller entered the transfer portal, it was the perfect opportunity for Notre Dame football to add the one thing it was missing — an elite quarterback.

Tyler Buchner might have been that. He could still be with Tommy Rees at Alabama. But Hartman is a proven commodity. There is no questioning his credentials.

You might wonder if having a transfer portal quarterback is the best way to win, however, in this day and age, it really is. Just look at guys like Michael Penix, Caleb Williams, Bo Nix, and others from last season.

Jordan Travis was a former transfer portal quarterback. Every single projected starter in the Pac-12 started their career somewhere else and there’s no reason to think Hartman won’t have a big season for Notre Dame football in 2023.

There’s a reason he finished ranked ahead of Devin Leary in terms of transfer portal quarterbacks. If Hartman had declared for the NFL draft, he would have been drafted. So the fact that Notre Dame was able to land him was huge.

It cost them Buchner. Yet, with five-star QB CJ Carr coming in the 2024 class, Notre Dame football still has a quarterback of the future.

Even dating back to Baker Mayfield and Jalen Hurts, Quinn Ewers, Hendon Hooker — the list goes on and on. It’s the era of the transfer portal quarterback and Notre Dame football fans should be excited that they landed the top guy in 2023.

We’ll see if it means a playoff berth for the Irish. That’s the expectation and anything less than that will be a disappointment, especially with the success of other transfer portal quarterbacks.
