Two quarterbacks for Texas A&M football in 2024 makes sense
The Texas A&M football program landed another 2024 quarterback on Wednesday and here’s why that’s a good idea for the Aggies.
Miles O’Neill is one of the fastest-rising quarterbacks in the 2024 recruiting class and now, after a commitment to Texas A&M football on Wednesday, another quality quarterback is off the board.
O’Neill isn’t super highly ranked. He’s a 6-foot-5, 220-pound quarterback out of Princeton, New Jersey. O’Neill is ranked 853rd overall in the 2024 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as the 52nd-best quarterback.
However, things have been picking up on the recruiting trail for O’Neill. Penn State and Texas A&M football both offered in May, but Maryland, Boston College, and Pittsburgh did recently as well.
During the month of June, O’Neill was supposed to take official visits to Michigan State and Boston College. The three-star signal-caller was in College Station last weekend.
Clearly, the Aggies did enough to finish the deal. In terms of the impact long term, it was a smart move. Texas A&M football now has two quarterbacks in the 2024 class. Anthony Maddox, a three-star ranked 446th overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings is also committed.
Here’s why taking two quarterbacks is a good thing for Texas A&M football.
Two quarterbacks are smart for A&M
Texas A&M hasn’t landed a top-100 quarterback in each of the past two cycles. That doesn’t mean the players that they have gotten verbal commitments from or signed aren’t talented players.
But there isn’t necessarily a sure-fire future starter after Conner Weigman. The former five-star quarterback also hasn’t really lived up to expectations yet.
Bobby Petrino was hired as offensive coordinator and the hope has to be that he can eventually help develop one or more of these prospects into starters.
Now, Texas A&M has improved its chances of finding a starter in the 2023/2024 classes. The Northeast can be under-recruited at times. I don’t think it’s a stretch to call O’Neill a riser either.
The Aggies landed another solid arm, which gives them another long-term option at quarterback, which is always a good thing in the transfer portal era.
