Big 12 football fans are gearing up for one final season with Texas and Oklahoma being part of the conference and it’s bittersweet seeing them go.

But that just means that this season will be as intense as ever as those programs will be working extra hard to try and steal one final Big 12 title.

The coaches on this list could win that 2023 Big 12 title, but if I had to put money on it, I’d say they probably won’t.

Here are my most overrated Big 12 coaches ahead of 2023.

3. Sonny Dykes, TCU

I’m not entirely sure that people are “overrating” Sonny Dykes a ton, but the fact that he made the national title game in his first season as head coach of TCU just skyrocketed the expectations for him moving forward.

While he had been a slightly above-average coach throughout his career before 2022, the fact that he was one win away from being a national champion may have fooled some people.

Is Dykes a bad coach? Not at all, but I have a hard time buying major stock in a coach who was 19-30 at Cal before seeing some success at SMU and then accepting the TCU job. He can help the Horned Frogs compete in the Big 12 again but if we’re just expecting him to push for a playoff berth every year, we’re going to be severely let down.

Dykes is a great offensive mind, but his career record before that 13-2 season last year was just 71-63. Let’s pump the brakes on the Dykes hype.
