1. Matt Campbell, Iowa State

Surprised to see Matt Campbell at No. 1 on this list? You shouldn’t be. The Iowa State head coach has constantly been considered one of the best in the league (he probably is) but he also gets away with some really mediocre seasons.

You might even see some fans say he’s the best coach in the conference and he gets treated as such every year because he’s always the subject of coaching carousel rumors for bigger jobs.

Campbell continues to turn down other jobs and remain the Iowa State head coach because he’s incredibly loyal, but Cyclone fans have to expect more than 7-8 wins as the ceiling. I get that Iowa State isn’t a historical power, but the way people treat Campbell is almost like he can do no wrong.

Coming off a 4-8 season in 2022, I am in the boat that he should have to win at least eight games in 2023 to really stay off the “warm” seat. He probably won’t even be discussed as a hot seat head coach, but that’s exactly why he’s overrated.

He’s a good coach, but he’s treated like a legend in Ames (a Fiesta Bowl win will do that).
