Notre Dame football has a really solid 2024 class and got a jolt of momentum on Saturday with the commitment of Brauntae Johnson.

Despite having a top-5 recruiting class in 2024, Notre Dame football has sort of been under the radar in terms of college football teams that get talked about as recruiting winners in 2024.

One reason for that could be that some of the key 2024 commitments for Notre Dame football have been committed since last summer, which is the case for CJ Carr and Cam Williams, who pledged to the Irish last June.

On Saturday though, Notre Dame football got a jolt of momentum, landing the commitment of four-star athlete Brauntae Johnson.

Johnson is 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, and out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Notre Dame football has always done well in the Midwest and Johnson is the third-ranked player in Indiana.

Not only that, he’s ranked 168th overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, which actually makes him Notre Dame football’s third highest-ranked commitment in the 2024 class.

Johnson could likely be a stellar wide receiver for Notre Dame but it sounds like he will play defensive back. Either way, his 247 Sports scouting report projects him as a second or third-round pick in the future.

What this addition means for Notre Dame football

This is the fifth commitment of the month for Notre Dame football in the 2024 class and the third that ranks as a blue chip according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Purdue and Tennessee were among the teams in the mix along with Michigan State and Cincinnati. The Irish have been the perceived leader for months but closed the deal ahead of what was supposed to be an official visit for Johnson to Purdue.

Notre Dame now has the fourth-ranked class in the 247 Sports team rankings. The Irish have 21 commitments total and this is the 14th recruit that’s ranked as a four-star.

That puts the blue-chip ratio at around 66 percent. Marcus Freeman has done a stellar job on the recruiting trail as Notre Dame football head coach. The Irish finished 12th a year ago with 17 blue-chippers, so there’s work to do to secure a top-10 class.

But as of right now, the Notre Dame football haul in 2024 is looking like one of the best in all of college football.
