Steve Sarkisian and Texas football have had a rather slow start to their 2024 recruiting class.

Heading into the month of June, the Longhorns weren’t even on the radar but they’re starting to really heat up on the recruiting trail over the last couple of weeks.

Prior to June, Texas had just two commits in three-star quarterback Trey Owens and three-star punter Michael Kern. There wasn’t exactly a ton of momentum behind the Longhorns, but that’s changed drastically over the past couple of weeks thanks to official visits.

On June 17, the Longhorns landed four-star cornerback Santana Wilson, the next day they landed four-star receiver Freddie Dubose, and on June 22, they picked up a commitment from four-star running back Christian Clark.

Well, on Saturday, the Longhorns remained hot and picked up another highly-touted running back in four-star Jerrick Gibson who happens to be the No. 2 rusher in the nation.

Gibson chose the Longhorns over the likes of Miami, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and many others. He is the biggest get in the class for Sarkisian and a guy who can be a staple of the backfield from day one.

Texas football garnering some attention on the trail

It was rather surprising to see Texas quiet on the recruiting trail through the month of June, but anyone could have told you that the Longhorns wouldn’t be silent for long.

Now with four big-time pickups since June 17, the Longhorns have jumped to the No. 55 recruiting class in the nation which is impressive seeing as the class was close to 100 before this flurry of commits and there are only six pledges in the group. Other classes ranked highly are in the double digits already.

Clearly Sarkisian is just getting started, folks.
