TCU football landed three blue-chip prospects this week and here are some thoughts on the Horned Frogs’ recent recruiting success.

It’s been a pretty good week to be a TCU football fan, at least if you follow recruiting as the Horned Frogs have landed three important commitments this week.

The 2024 class still has work to do but it’s off to a solid start. Sonny Dykes and the Horned Frogs have nine commitments total and they rank 38th overall according to the 247 Sports team rankings.

However, five of the nine commitments are blue-chip prospects (four-star recruits or higher ranked) and TCU football has added three of those in the past week.

The commitment numbers will surely go up, although TCU football might not sign as many recruits as in previous classes due to the transfer portal. It’s something to consider with every team.

But with the addition of four-star quarterback Ty Hawkins, who is a 2025 QB, plus blue-chippers at running back and wideout in 2024, it was a really a good few days for TCU football on the recruiting trail, and here are three thoughts.

Reacting to a big week for TCU football recruiting

  • Gekyle Baker‘s commitment on Friday was a big get for TCU. He’s ranked as the No. 17 wide receiver in the 2024 class and the 23rd-best player in Texas. The four-star is also 116th overall, which makes him the top-ranked pledge for the Horned Frogs. For TCU football, recruiting well in Texas is always going to be important. It’s fertile ground for players that fit their offense and Baker is a perfect example of that. At 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, he’s incredibly explosive. His highlights are filled with long touchdown plays and he’s a track athlete too. He’ll have to develop more route-running skills but he’s explosive enough and comes from a system similar to TCU, so he should be a natural fit. I would think he’d contribute early after nearly 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore and junior in Texas 4A football.
  • Four-star running back Jeremy Payne was the top-ranked pledge for TCU football in 2024 after his commitment this past week (until Baker). He’s ranked 248th overall and the No. 17 running back in the 2024 class. At 5-foot-10, 170, Payne is also a great fit for what TCU wants to do. He’s rushed for over 2,400 the past two seasons and averaged more than nine yards per carry as a junior. He’s also a talented receiver and is going to be a versatile weapon for the Horned Frogs in the future.
  • Lastly, the Horned Frogs did well to add their 2025 quarterback already in four-star Ty Hawkins. The 6-foot, 185-pounder is ranked 231st overall in the 2025 class via the 247 Sports composite rankings. Out of San Antonio, Hawkins is ranked 14th among quarterbacks and should be a perfect triggerman for TCU football down the road. Stacking quarterback commitments is important and this was a really solid get to follow up Elite 11 participant Hauss Hejny (also from Texas) who is committed in 2024.
