Nebraska football stayed hot on the recruiting trail with the commitment of Carter Nelson, which is the biggest get yet for head coach Matt Rhule.

Nebraska football fans could feel the commitment of Carter Nelson coming. But on Wednesday, the 8-man football star from Ainsworth, Nebraska made it official.

According to a tweet from On3 recruiting reporter Hayes Fawcett, Nelson said simply, “Nebraska is home and we are going to win.”

I can’t think of a better message. I also can’t think of a more important recruiting victory in the young tenure of Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule.

Yes, there was Malachi Coleman in the 2023 class and that was huge. This is really close to the fact, but add in the fact that Georgia, Notre Dame, and Penn State all made strong pushes to make this recruiting victory even sweeter.

A head-to-head win for Nebraska over Georgia

A few weeks ago, it looked like the Bulldogs, the two-time defending national champions were going to land their first recruit from Nebraska in a long time. Georgia hosted Nelson for an official visit and Kirby Smart made it clear that UGA wanted him, even with two tight ends already in the 2024 class — that’s how special Nelson can be.

He’s 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5. He also high jumps seven feet and once he focuses solely on tight end — watch out.

Last year, Nelson played quarterback, running back, receiver, and more. That’s just 8-man football. You get the ball to your best player as much as possible.

In a few years, Nelson might be the best player on the Nebraska football roster. He’s the seventh-ranked tight end in total, and even that ranking is too low in my opinion.

If Nelson didn’t live in Nebraska and didn’t play 8-man football, he would be a top 50 prospect and some services have him ranked that high anyway. 247 Sports does in its own rankings. They have him ranked No. 2 among tight ends and 40th overall.

Carter Nelson is as elite as they come for Nebraska recruits and the fact that Rhule landed a top-100 recruit from the state of Nebraska with other schools pushing hard is a huge win.

In both instances, Nelson and Coleman, other schools got crystal ball projections weeks before they eventually committed to Nebraska football, which tells you Matt Rhule knows how to close and not just with three-star recruits.

Rhule can land the big fish and because of his recruiting prowess, the future is looking bright once again for Nebraska football.
