Can the UConn football offense improve?

To say that the offense won ugly is an understatement. The formula was simple, run the football, limit mistakes, and control the clock. The Huskies and offensive coordinator Nick Charlton ran the football a ton last season. Five players had over 60 carries in 2022. Nate Carter had 65 carries and played only four games.

Offensive improvement comes down to improved quarterback play. Penn State transfer Ta’Quan Roberson was the perfect fit for the Huskies’ run-first offense before tearing his ACL in week one last year. True freshman Zion Turner was thrown in, and all he did was lead the Huskies to a bowl game.

Suffice it to say there will be a battle for QB1 this summer and fall. Victor Rosa and Devontae Houston return to run the football. The Huskies add Louisville transfer Jalen Mitchell to help tote the rock.

The offensive line returns four of five starters, so the running game should be as productive as last year. Where UConn needs to improve is the passing game.

Roberson and Turner need to progress as passers, but they need someone to step up at wide receiver. Last year’s leading receiver, Aaron Turner, is in the portal. Only Kevens Clercius and tight end Justin Joly had double-digit receptions.

They hope Michigan transfer tight end Louis Hansen can give them some juice in the receiving game. They also need one of the receivers to step up and be a go-to target on the perimeter.
