Every single year, there are some college football teams that are so hyped up that they cannot possibly live up to the expectations based on some flaws and tough schedules.

Last year, it felt like teams such as Michigan State, Oklahoma, Miami, and Texas A&M were some of the most disappointing contenders. They were all projected to be near the top of their respective conferences but they all suffered through their struggles and ended the season by finishing around .500 or even missing bowls.

Who will be this year’s disappointing contenders? I have five on my mind.

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Why is Notre Dame on this list? History told me to do it. I actually really like this year’s Notre Dame team from Sam Hartman to Audric Estime to that reloading defense. I even think Marcus Freeman is a budding star in the coaching ranks.

But something about Notre Dame and high preseason expectations just usually doesn’t end well. It’s a tale as old as time.

The Irish are considered a legit playoff threat this season with Hartman coming in to lead the offense but the receiving corps is relatively unproven and the defense lost some key players. I do think the Irish will be a top-20 team this season and win nine or 10 games, but I just don’t see them heading to the playoff.

I mean, they have to play at NC State, Duke, and Clemson while also facing Ohio State, USC, Pitt, and Wake Forest. They could win a majority of those games, but even three losses in those seven tough games could equate to a disappointing season with no New Year’s Six bowl.
