The 2023 college football season is just over a month away and we’re all looking forward to watching our favorite teams compete for titles.

Most of us are optimistic about our program’s future, including the head coaching positions. A lot of us believe that the current head coach of our program is the one that’s going to lead our teams to the top. But that’s not always the case.

There are coaches on the hot seat heading into each season and often, there are some coaches that end up with warm seats at the end of the year who you’d never expect to be in the conversation.

Who could be this year’s surprise hot seat coaches following the 2023 season?

5. Dana Holgorsen, Houston

Believe it or not, Dana Holgorsen was the subject of hot seat rumors just one year after winning double-digit games for Houston. The Cougars fell short of expectations in 2022.

But Holgorsen had a heck of a quote when asked about the rumors saying, “Ain’t no (expletive) hot seat in my mind.”

Usually when you hear some kind of quote like this with a coach not even acknowledging the rumors and stating that he doesn’t believe he’s on the hot seat, it doesn’t end well. Unfortunately, Houston’s move to the Big 12 is only going to make Holgorsen’s job even tougher.

If Houston misses a bowl game this season, I could see him getting let go after the season which was almost unfathomable after he went 12-2 in 2021. That would make three losing seasons in five years with the program. Not many coaches survive that.
