3. Matt Campbell, Iowa State

The rise to stardom for Matt Campbell came quickly and raged on for years. He went from a successful coach at Toledo to a rebuilding program at Iowa State. It took just one year for Campbell to completely turn the Cyclones around, going from 3-9 in his first year to an eight-win team the next season.

Campbell won at least seven games in each season from 2017-2021 and had some major upsets mixed in (the most famous was at Oklahoma).

Not many coaches can do what he’s done at Iowa State, but it feels like the program is now trending in the wrong direction. It just feels like things have gotten stale and Campbell isn’t making the necessary changes to keep up with the times. He also once stated that conference titles are not the goal for him and the Cyclones. Not a great quote. Since that quote prior to the 2021 season, he’s just 11-14.

Coming off a 4-8 season, the rumors of him looking for other jobs have calmed down quite a bit as he was once one of the hottest names in the coaching carousel.

Another bowl-less season may turn up the heat on the once-untouchable seat of Campbell.
