Who would have thought a year ago at this time that Nebraska football would be ushering in a new era with Matt Rhule at the helm? Definitely not me, but here we are.

And Cornhusker fans are ecstatic.

The program is in the middle of a turnaround and the rebuild may not take as long as some other programs, especially with how well Rhule has been recruiting.

Some of his recruits (transfers and such) may break out in 2023. Who are the top breakout candidates for Nebraska?

Nebraska will be looking for someone to step up and help the new quarterback out as the No. 1 receiver with 1,000-yard wideout Trey Palmer moving on.

My bet would be Marcus Washington to fill that role.

The former Texas receiver and four-star prospect from the 2019 class spent three seasons with the Longhorns and didn’t have a huge impact before transferring to Nebraska in 2022. He had a career year with the Cornhuskers, catching 31 passes for 471 yards and a touchdown.

Guys like Billy Kemp and Zavier Betts could push for that No. 1 receiver role, but Washington is going to be the go-to target more than likely.

Although he is a senior, he’s going to “break out” in 2023.
