Can the ULM Football offense take another step forward?

The offense improved under Terry Bowden and his staff. The Warhawks must score more points to find those elusive two wins in 2023. In its last two games — both losses — they scored under 20 points. If the Warhawks are going to score more points, they need solid quarterback play.

Chandler Rodgers, last season’s starter, transferred to North Texas. JUCO transfer Jiya Wright is most likely the starter in 2023. He’s a great athlete but unproven. Louisiana transfer Hunter Herring could push for the starting job. Quarterback wasn’t the only position hit hard by the transfer portal during the offseason.

The Warhawks lost its top two running backs and two of its best offensive linemen to the transfer portal. Wright’s running ability should help the offense, especially with zone-read concepts. He’ll need one of the younger tailbacks to emerge so defenses respect the mesh point.

Offensive coordinator Matt Kubik does have “Mr. Everything” Tyrone Powell back at wide receiver. Aired Luke is a solid slot option at receiver as well. That puts the Warhawks in an interesting position. Louisiana-Monroe’s best offensive options are at receiver, but its quarterback is inexperienced.
