History says college football’s national champion will be one of these 7 teams in 2023

Everyone knows the famous quote about history repeating itself. It’s true in terms of world history as well as college football history.

History is known to repeat itself.

And if that holds true, that means that we’ve narrowed down the actual national title contenders from over 130 FBS teams to just seven.

According to Brett McMurphy, history says that every national champ has been ranked among the AP preseason Top 25’s top seven but two since 2004. The only two exceptions were Auburn in 2010 and Florida State in 2013. Other than that, every single champion was in the preseason top seven.

So who does that mean has a chance this year? Chances are the title will be won by Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, USC, and Penn State who make up the top-seven teams in the country, respectively.

With this McMurphy tweet, that means we can focus on those seven teams are the top contenders for the national title this year and there aren’t any surprises in that group.

You can also say that the national champion is somewhere in the AP Top 25 because every single champion in that time span since 2004 has been ranked to start the year and all but one was in the top 11.

Each of the top-seven teams has what it takes to make a run at a national title and unseat No. 1 Georgia who has won back-to-back championships.
