College football has been played in Ireland on-and-off since 1988. The sport has taken its talents across the Atlantic seven times and Notre Dame football will make it eight this season as it takes on Navy to kick off Week 0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Irish have been to Ireland twice throughout the history of the program which doesn’t seem like enough, especially considering the team’s mascot.

Notre Dame will be one of the teams everyone will be watching in Week 0 as it takes on Navy. The Irish are one of two ranked teams playing on the first Saturday of the season. The Midshipmen went just 4-8 last season and really struggled but Brian Newberry takes over for Ken Niumatalolo and it hoping to have better luck this year.

I think Notre Dame wins this one with relative ease, especially with Sam Hartman at quarterback.

If that happens, what would Notre Dame’s all-time Ireland record be?

Notre Dame football’s record in Ireland

Notre Dame has played twice in Ireland before, as mentioned before, and its record is currently 2-0 with a couple of wins over Navy already.

The first time Notre Dame played in Ireland was back in 1995 and the No. 19 Irish beat Navy 54-27 at Croke Park with an attendance just under 40,000. The next time they played was in 2012 and the Irish won 50-10 at Aviva Stadium with an attendance just under 50,000.

The game this season on Aug. 26 will be at Aviva Stadium again where the capacity for American football games is 49,000. I’m expecting another big turnout.

And while the Irish may not win by 40 again this time, I do expect a comfortable win.
