Caleb Williams is the favorite to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy for a reason and the campaign to repeat is off to a great start in the USC football opener.

USC football quarterback Caleb Williams is one of those players that is always worth a watch. You don’t know what you’re going to see, but at some point, you know that Williams is going to do something special.

The USC football season opener against San Jose State was no different. The Week 0 game was tight early with the Trojans leading 7-0 in the second quarter when Williams jumpstarted his 2023 Heisman Trophy campaign with one of those plays that will stick on his highlight reel.

Facing a third and six, there was a bad snap and the ball actually bounced off the ground into the hands of Williams, who collected it and launched an absolute bomb down the field in what turned out to be a 77-yard touchdown pass, the longest of his career, to Tahj Washington.

That was Williams’ second touchdown pass of the game. The first went to Arizona transfer Dorian Signer. He was the big addition in the transfer portal this offseason and is expected to fill the void of Jordan Addison.

Williams opened the scoring with a 17-yard strike to Singer, giving him two touchdowns on the year, which is a long way to go toward reaching the 52 total he had in 2022.

However, after just a couple of quarters, Williams looks 100 percent healthy and frankly, he looks as good as ever. He’ll have plenty to prove against teams like Utah and Notre Dame this season but expect to see a lot more highlights like the 77-yard touchdown to Washington.
