The 2023 college football season is kicking off with a handful of games in Week 0, and Hawaii vs Vanderbilt could be one of the more interesting matchups of the day.

The Rainbow Warriors and Commodores have faced off only once in their history, a 63-10 win by Vanderbilt in 2022 at Hawaii. This year will be the second half of that home-and-home series.

Vandy is trying to build on last year’s 5-7 record under third-year head coach Clark Lea. The Commodores haven’t finished above .500 since 2013.

Meanwhile, Hawaii is also rebuilding under the second year of head coach Timmy Chang, who was tasked with trying to fix a program nearly decimated by his predecessor, Todd Graham.

Hawaii vs Vanderbilt odds as of game day

Per FanDuel Sportsbook, the Commodores are 17.5-point favorites over Hawaii. Given last year’s beat-down and the returning players on the Vandy squad, this big spread isn’t surprising.

As of kickoff, the over/under line sits at 55.5 which may seem a bit high, but this could indeed end up being a high-scoring affair. The over doesn’t look too intimidating for this matchup.

The moneyline sits at +720 for Hawaii and -1200 on Vanderbilt.

The last thing Vanderbilt wants to do is begin the season as the first SEC team to lose an out-of-conference game, and they should be well-prepared for an overmatched Hawaii team.

Hawaii vs Vanderbilt final predictions

Last year, Vandy got off to a fast start and never looked back. While this may not be last year’s 3-10 Rainbow Warriors, they doubtfully have improved enough to match up with even the lower side of the SEC.

The Commodores will bring SEC physicality to the game again, and will probably turn to quarterback AJ Swann early to build a big lead before the Rainbow Warriors have a chance to get over the jetlag.

Vandy should easily cover the big spread.
