The Nebraska football season opener is Thursday and we offer our prediction for the Huskers record in 2023 and whether they will make a bowl game.

Nebraska football fans have been waiting patiently for the start of the Matt Rhule era and things will get started on Thursday night against Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers are going to present their own challenge for Nebraska football. However, the big goal this season, at least in the minds of fans, is getting back to a bowl game.

Matt Rhule talked about Nebraska earning back respect this season at Big Ten Media Days. He didn’t really talk about wins and losses, but a losing season won’t be met kindly in Lincoln.

Nebraska football fans are tired of losing and here are our final game-by-game predictions for the Huskers going into the 2023 season.

Nebraska at Minnesota on Aug. 31 (L)

This is a tough opener for Matt Rhule. The Gophers do have a new starting quarterback in Athan Kaliakmanis but he played the entire second half against Nebraska last season in a win.

Mo Ibrahim is also gone, but P.J. Fleck went to his old school, Western Michigan, and landed running back Sean Tyler, who is going to be just fine.

The offensive line is deep and experienced. Chris Autman-Bell will return this season from injury and on the road, it just seems like a tall mountain to climb.

Nebraska is going to be close and I think the Huskers will cover the spread, but the Rhule era starts off with a loss on Thursday.

Minnesota 23, Nebraska 20 (0-1)

Nebraska at Colorado on Sept. 9 (W)

Nebraska football fans have been waiting all offseason for Colorado and in my eyes, this game will feature two 0-1 teams.

Colorado is a three-touchdown underdog against TCU this week. The Buffaloes have a lot of excitement surrounding them, but Nebraska should be much better up front.

Jeff Sims will have a stellar game and the running backs will break out against an overmatched Colorado defense. Meanwhile, the Huskers’ defense will carry the day.

Nebraska 31, Colorado 17 (1-1)
