Week 0 of the college football season is OK. But there’s nothing like the real thing and we’ll get that on Thursday night as Florida and Utah lead an exciting slate of games on Thursday night, kicking off Week 1 of the 2023 season.
Florida and Utah also played in Week 1 of the 2022 season. That matchup was in Gainesville and was a memorable affair decided in the final moments. Anthony Richardson led a game-winning touchdown drive and the Gators handed the Utes a loss that likely cost Utah a berth in the College Football Playoff.
If everything else happened the same way, Utah would have finished the season 12-1 and with a Pac-12 title, as well as a road win over Florida, and a sweep over USC.
It just shows how important these games can be. A key factor in last year’s game was quarterback Cam Rising.
Rising is a two-time Pac-12 champion and ranked as one of our top 15 quarterbacks in college football for this season. But will he play on Thursday night? Utah has been really vague about it, but if it’s possible, I wouldn’t bet against Rising.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has danced around the issue of Rising’s health this week, but Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Wednesday that Rising is unlikely to start.

Bryson Barnes is expected to get the start for Utah. Barnes has 59 career pass attempts and five touchdowns. Nate Johnson is another quarterback that could see time and he’s an athletic dude.
Graham Mertz will be starting for Florida but Jack Miller his backup is listed as questionable, along with two other starters: C Kingsley Eguakun and DE Chris McClellan.
Florida vs. Utah series history
This is only the third matchup between Florida and Utah. The previous two were both in Gainesville. The Gators won 29-26 last season, as well as 38-29 back in 1977.
