Iowa football recorded a passing TD feat that it hadn’t done since 1991

When was the last time Iowa football had a competent passing attack? It’s been a while, right?

Well, Kirk Ferentz addressed the need for offense this offseason with the addition of Cade McNamara at quarterback as well as some other pieces on the offensive side of the ball at tight end and receiver.

That’s obviously going to improve the passing attack.

And it already has. McNamara threw a touchdown pass on his first two drives as Iowa jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead before anyone could even blink. It was a very un-Iowa start to the game.

Even more, it was a nearly unprecedented start to the season for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa football accomplishes feat for first time in over 30 years

According to a FOX Sports 1 graphic that flashed during the game, Iowa recorded an opening-drive touchdown pass to start the season for the first time since 1991. Not even joking.

I had to do a double-take when I saw this stat because I thought that there was no way that could be true. That means that the Hawkeyes failed to record a passing touchdown to open the season for 31 straight years. That’s unheard of. You have to try hard to go through a drought like this.

That also means that it’s the first season-opening first-drive touchdown pass of the Kirk Ferentz era in Iowa City. Make it make sense.

Now that McNamara is under center, anything is possible for the Hawkeyes’ offense. We may just have to buy stock in Iowa as Big Ten West favorites this season.
