Quarterback Drew Allar has been one of the questions for Penn State football this season and his first drive should ease some concerns.

If Penn State football fans had concerns about new starting quarterback Drew Allar going into the 2023 season and the season opener against West Virginia, they were likely wiped away with one stellar pass by the former five-star quarterback.

Allar, a former five-star signee from the state of Ohio in the 2022 recruiting class, saw some action for the Nittany Lions in 2022, sort of like J.J. McCarthy for Michigan in 2021.

Penn State football, ranked No. 7 by the AP, is hoping Allar, who is taking over for the graduated Sean Clifford — now the Packers’ backup — can do something similar to what McCarthy did in his first season as a starter.

Obviously, going undefeated in the regular season and winning a Big Ten title is a high bar to meet, but with all the talent the Nittany Lions have, especially at running back, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Drew Allar era is off to a dream start

The question often came back to Allar and in his first start inside Beaver Stadium, Allar completed his first two passes to KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the second of which covered 72 yards on a deep bomb which put Penn State football in front 7-0.

Penn State is a team with Big Ten title aspirations, and potentially even national title hopes. Urban Meyer says they have the talent and if Drew Allar is as good as that 72-yard touchdown pass, the Nittany Lions could be the Big Ten’s best team.
