Heisman Trophy watch 2023: Top 5 candidates heading into Week 2
The major storylines surrounding Caleb Williams this week are stemming from his father stating that he’s not a lock to enter the NFL draft after the season.
I don’t buy that for a second.
Williams, a very good option as the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, is off to a scorching-hot start to the 2023 season and he’s proving to be a potential Heisman repeat option. He is playing as well as you can through two games against inferior opponents and his numbers reflect that.
Against San Jose State to start the season in Week 0, Williams had 278 yards and four touchdowns on 18-of-25 completions with no picks. He averaged an impressive 11.1 yards per attempt. And against Nevada the following week, he had 319 yards and five touchdowns on 18-of-24 completions with an astounding 13.3 yards per attempt.
It’s clear that he hasn’t taken a step back this season and his 12.2 yards per attempt and nine touchdowns with zero interceptions may be unsustainable, but that line is crazy nonetheless.
Someone is going to have to rip the Heisman out of this dude’s hands.
