Nebraska football fans had hope for the Matt Rhule era, but so far, it has been a disaster thanks mostly to quarterback Jeff Sims.

Football is a team game, yes. But the quarterback is the most important position for a reason and when you have a quarterback as bad as Jeff Sims is right now, you aren’t going to win games.

It’s harsh but it’s true. The first 1.5 games of Sims’ tenure with the Nebraska football team have been nothing but an unmitigated disaster.

The former Georgia Tech transfer opened his career with three turnovers last week against Minnesota, including one in a goal-to-go situation, as well as another in a tie game with less than two minutes left.

Nebraska football fans were hoping it was a one-time thing, even though Jeff Sims had 26 interceptions in 26 career games going into the Colorado game.

The first drive started well enough with a completion to Billy Kemp. But then Jeff Sims, dropped a shotgun snap, which led to a fumble recovery for Colorado, taking potential points off the board as the Huskers were inside the 30.

Nebraska football got inside the 30 on another drive, when Sims didn’t time the motion correctly, causing an early snap and a fumble on a key third down. Nebraska recovered but missed a field goal.

Nebraska’s defense has been great, but Sims has been brutally bad

Defensively, the Huskers were outstanding last week and have been great against Colorado. The score was 0-0 when Sims dropped another snap and fumbled the ball inside his own 30. After the Nebraska defense held the Buffaloes to a three-and-out, CU made a field goal.

On the next possession, Sims threw an interception, which led to a Colorado touchdown. So, Nebraska could be leading, but instead trails Colorado 13-0 at halftime, just like it would have won last week, if it wasn’t for Sims’ blunders.

Through 1.5 games, Sims has four interceptions, three fumbles (two lost), and one touchdown, and his team has scored a total of 10 points.

Oh, and the one touchdown drive covered 34 yards because it came after a 60-yard kickoff return and was on a trick play. Matt Rhule might have been a good hire. It’s too early to tell.

But his first big decision was Jeff Sims at quarterback and so far, it’s been nothing but a disaster which makes you think that it’s quite possible Rhule is in over his head.
