Missouri football tried to mess things up at the end, but the Tigers got bailed out by a 61-yard field goal to upset Kansas State.

Eli Drinkwitz has been waiting for a defining win as the head coach of the Missouri football program and it came on Saturday, although there was some suspense and frustration along the way.

As the Tigers and 15th-ranked Kansas State were tied 27-27 with less than a minute to go, Missouri football was driving down the field to attempt to set up a game-winning attempt from Harrison Mevis.

The Tigers achieved that goal, advancing the ball to the 39-yard line of Kansas State with less than 10 seconds to go. However, inexplicably, the Tigers were called for a delay of game penalty, which drew a crowd of boos (rightly so).

A 56-yard field goal to win a game is difficult enough, especially for a college football player, but 61 yards? No way.

Yes, way.

Especially when you consider that Harrison Mevis was 1-of-3 on the season coming into Saturday’s game. But sure enough, Mevis drilled the 61-yard field goal, which just happened to be the longest in the history of the SEC (but not Missouri history) to give the Tigers an upset win over 15th-ranked Kansas State.

Brady Cook was spectacular completing 23-of-35 passes for 356 yards and two touchdowns compared to zero interceptions. Drinkwitz has been trying to build something at Missouri but had a 19-19 record coming into today.

You could imagine how frustrated Missouri fans would be if that kick didn’t go in and the Tigers lost. That delay-of-game penalty would have been hard to forget.

Instead, all Missouri football fans will remember from Saturday’s game is the legendary field goal of Mevis, who may have kicked the Tigers into the Top 25 next week.
