Considering Alabama vs. Ole Miss is a matchup between the 13th and 15th ranked teams in the nation, respectively, it feels like one team is getting a disproportionate amount of the conversation in the buildup, but it’s for pretty good reason.

Alabama football is going through its most difficult start to a season since Nick Saban’s first in Tuscaloosa, a 2007 year that included a loss to Louisiana-Monroe. That low hasn’t been reached yet in 2023, but after a double-digit loss to Texas (the biggest home defeat in Saban’s coaching career), as well as an unimpressive 17-3 win at South Florida, the questions surrounding this program are massive.

Ole Miss, meanwhile, has been the solid squad many expected. They’ve handled their business against Mercer and Georgia Tech, and pulled off an impressive 37-20 road win against now-24th ranked Tulane.

This result could be a massive development in the SEC, and national, landscape. If Ole Miss wins this game, it will be the fourth former Saban assistant that has become a head coach and defeated their mentor, the second addition to that list in just three weeks. That will also have made it two home losses in Tuscaloosa already in 2023, further chipping away at the mystique that the Tide have held for so long.

If Alabama wins this game, they’ll maintain the status quo and stave off some of the questions about the end of the dynasty, at least for now.

Alabama vs. Ole Miss series history

All-Time: Alabama leads 54-10-2

This is a lopsided one, to say the least. In 68 matchups, Alabama has won 54, while Ole Miss has won 10, and two of these games ended in ties.

The Crimson Tide have won seven straight after that Ole Miss back-to-back in 2014-15 under now-Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze. Before that, the Rebels’ most recent victory was in 2003.

Both programs have had wins vacated during the last 20 years, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find any fans in Oxford or Tuscaloosa who’ve forgotten how those games played out.
