Kalen DeBoer’s Huskies completely outmatched Cal on their way to a huge Pac-12 victory Saturday night. What can we glean from the big Washington football win?

1. This Washington team could be playoff-bound

When the Huskies reached the College Football Playoff under Chris Petersen, their quarterback was Jake Browning. They were bounced from the semifinal game, in convincing fashion, by Alabama.

So, why is this team different? What makes them capable of getting past potentially more talented teams if they reach that final four?

It’s simple: Michael Penix.

The Huskies have a similar level of talent to that 2017 team, but they no longer have a game-manager at quarterback. Penix is an electric passer who may throw the best ball in college football.

When you pair that with the usual stout defense and fundamentally sound offensive line, you start to see a team that can compete in January.
