3. Blind faith in Kyle Whittingham

Kyle Whittingham and Utah are one of the most reliable programs in college football. Year in and year out, the Utes win football games, especially against the teams they’re supposed to beat.

Since 2018, Utah football is 25-11 in the Pac-12. Of those 11 losses, just four are to teams that aren’t named Oregon, Washington, or USC. They get caught by those more talented teams, but it’s rare for Utah to lose to Arizona, Washington State, or, in this case, Oregon State.

The Beavers are having their strongest season in years, but there’s a chance the bottom is about to fall out. They were really good against San Jose State and UC Davis, but in the last two weeks, a bit of the beaver hype has fizzled.

Against San Diego State, the final score was 26-9. The transitive theory doesn’t always mean a lot in this sport, but it’s one indicator of many. UCLA, who Utah shut down last week, beat the Aztecs 35-10 earlier in the year. The Beavers feel a lot like the Bruins.

Oregon State looks good, but Utah is the gatekeeper in the conference. Until you beat the Utes, it’s hard to know just how good you are.

The evidence, so far, suggests the Beavers may be in for a rude awakening on Friday night.
