BYU football improved to 4-1 on the year and 1-1 in Big 12 play with a nice win over Cincinnati on Friday night.

This was a game full of big plays ranging from pick-sixes to muffed punts, as well as some big plays on offense from both teams. It had all the makings of a Big 12 matchup, and these teams look as though they will fit in nicely in this conference.

Let’s run through some of my takeaways from the game.

1. The offenses were not as impressive as the score indicated

This game turned out to be a bit of a shootout, but let’s not forget that BYU had a defensive score in the first quarter, and was essentially gifted another score with a muffed punt.

Cincinnati capitalized on a short field as well for a touchdown.

Don’t get me wrong, this BYU offense has some playmakers. However, let’s not overreact and put them up there with the top offenses in the country, let alone the Big 12. This looks like a team that should finish somewhere in the middle of the Big 12, and there are some major tests coming up quickly on the schedule.

This offense will have an opportunity to prove it against the top teams in the league.
